🏛️ Foundation & Background

Founded in 1964 by Mrs. Varalakshmi Rao — a devoted disciple of Swami Sivananda — SSMI was born to honor the teachings of service, discipline, and dignity. Starting as the Swami Sivananda Institute of Fine Arts and Crafts, the organization found its home on a 4-acre campus in East Punjabi Bagh, New Delhi. Over the decades, it grew into a secular, independent, non-profit society driven by one vision: empowering underprivileged women and children with pride.

⚖️ Challenges & Struggles

In the early days, the concept of vocational training for women was groundbreaking — and not without resistance. The journey to uplift families through education, nutrition, and employment met with socio-economic hurdles, lack of funding, and infrastructural challenges. But SSMI held its ground, slowly changing mindsets while changing lives.

🌱 Growth & Milestones

What started as a small initiative has grown to serve over 20,000 beneficiaries every day. SSMI established:

• 🥗 A robust Nutrition Programme
• 👩‍🏫 Vocational and Production Centres for Women
• 👶 Early Child Care & Education Center
• 🏥 Health and wellness outreach in local communities

📌 Current Work & Impact

Today, SSMI employs more than 300 dedicated staff across its programs. The institute is a hub of education, healthcare, nutrition, and sustainable employment for marginalized communities in Delhi. Self-run food and textile production units not only empower women with skills but also financially sustain the organization’s charitable work. Every meal served, every child taught, and every woman trained adds a ripple of dignity and independence into the community.

SSMI envisions a society where no woman or child is left behind because of poverty. Future goals include:

• Expanding digital literacy among underprivileged children
