Rooted in Care: The Work of Vrikshit Foundation
Real change starts when a few decide to rise above comfort for the collective good. The story of Vrikshit Foundation is one such story — born out of resolve, grown by compassion, and sustained by thousands who believe that a cleaner, greener, and fairer India is not a dream, but a duty.
Since its humble beginning in 2019, Vrikshit Foundation has evolved into one of India’s fastest-growing youth-driven environmental NGOs — not for profit, but purely for purpose.
🌱 A Seed of Change
It all started with just 5 volunteers who refused to look away from overflowing garbage dumps and toxic urban corners. They believed that change doesn’t require permission — just courage. Thus began a movement, not just to clean, but to care.
With a heart rooted in compassion and eyes set on impact, they laid the foundation of Vrikshit with two strong goals: Restore the environment and empower the underprivileged.
🌍 From Resistance to Recognition: The Struggles
Cleaning India was never going to be easy. Ridicule, lack of resources, and societal apathy often clouded their path. But where others saw waste, Vrikshit volunteers saw worth. They marched on — with brooms in hand and belief in heart.
Their grit didn’t go unnoticed. From facing community pushback to being called for tea by Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal, every step became a milestone in their ever-growing mission.
📈 Milestones that Made a Movement
Between 2019 and 2024, Vrikshit Foundation has transformed from a 5-person effort into a nationwide and now international force. Some of their proudest milestones include:
- ✅ 70+ media coverages (including 8 national and 2 international features)
- ✅ Verified on Instagram, Twitter, Facebook
- ✅ Recognized by UNV India & North MCD
- ✅ Invited to speak at TEDx and IIT Guwahati
- ✅ Over 7.5 million kg of waste removed from cities and riverbanks
- ✅ 21,000+ trees planted and 100k challenge underway
- ✅ 35+ active teams with over 8,000+ dedicated volunteers
🌊 Current Campaigns: More Than Just Cleanliness
Vrikshit’s mission now spans across multiple campaigns — all aligned with the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs 3, 11, 13, 14, 15). Current projects include:
- 🌊 Yamuna Bank Cleanups — reviving riverbanks choked by pollution
- 🌳 The 100k Trees Challenge — aiming to plant 100,000 native trees
- 🏘️ Awareness drives in slums — advocating for sanitary living conditions
- 👫 Community engagement programs to educate and involve youth in local sustainability
Each campaign is backed by tireless volunteers who sacrifice their weekends, holidays, and comfort — all to gift their fellow citizens cleaner air and a greener future.
🔮 The Vision Ahead
Vrikshit Foundation envisions a world where urban development and environmental sustainability go hand in hand. They are working towards:
- Building eco-friendly urban zones through tree cover and waste recycling
- Creating awareness platforms across colleges and schools to inspire future changemakers
- Expanding their volunteer network to 50,000 youth by 2027
- Launching sanitation initiatives in 200+ slum communities across India
“We don’t just plant trees. We plant hope,” says one of their volunteers. And that’s the ethos that drives this growing tribe of green warriors.
